Early Days of Atlantic Steel

by Hal Jacobs

December 7, 1998

After the Atlantic Steel mill closes on December 31, 1998, its history will go two directions. Archives, blueprints, issues of "The Ladle" and memorabilia from the company will be housed at the Atlanta History Center (contact Michael Rose). Documents from the U.S. Steelworkers Local Union 2401 will reside in the Georgia State Archives.

If you would like to read an earthy sketch of the early days of the company, see the address by Mr. C. L. McGowan to the Quarter Century Club of Atlantic Steel Company on November 20, 1954. McGowan goes back to the hot day he arrived in Atlanta on July 1906.

I've scanned the original document and saved it in five pages (for quicker access) in Adobe Acrobat.

McGowan's speech: p. 1 | p.2 | p.3 | p.4 | p.5
